THERE’S a new name hitting the professional boxing scene in 2015 after welterweight Kian Thomas decided the time was right to hang up his amateur gloves.
The 23-year-old, who lives in Tufnell Park, has enjoyed a glittering career with St Pancras Amateur Boxing Club, winning 26 of his 30 fights.
The highlight of which, without doubt, came towards the end of 2013 when he stopped two opponents on the way to being crowned national champion.
Dubbed “Kian Kong” by his club-mates, the former William Ellis schoolboy is determined to be a big hit this year as he now looks to make a name for himself in the paid ranks.
“I’ve been in the amateur ranks long enough,” said Kian. “From day one it’s always been about turning professional. I’m 23 now, and can’t wait forever. It feels like the perfect time.”
It won’t be all change for Kian, however, as he’s sticking with Saints’ coach CJ Hussein, who also trains Kilburn middleweight Alan Higgins.
“I’ve known CJ for almost 10 years, he’s like family to me,” added Kian. “I know he has my best interests at heart. He knows my strengths, and my weaknesses – so there’s no one better to have in my corner.”
A big Arsenal fan, Kian, who works as an architectural technician, has made it clear that he won’t be rushing into the ring before he is ready. “Since November I’ve been training solid. I’m injury free and in great shape,” he said.
“I’m hoping to make my professional debut in March or April – but there’s no rush.
“I want to gain more experience sparring in different gyms, and work with CJ so that I can get even fitter and faster.
“For now it’s all about staying in the gym, and staying focused.”
