Taxing school-run 4x4s might not take us the right direction

• HAVING arrived in Camden from Aberdeen, I agree with Christopher Truman on one thing (The wealthy polluters gaining a free education for their children is an obscenity, July 18) – a giant 4×4 best suited to rural life seems like an odd choice for a central London school-run.
But his proposal to levy fees on any parent driving a £10,000 vehicle just left me confused. So many children would be affected that universal free education would vanish, with many schools effectively becoming fee-paying institutions. Private schools would quickly outnumber state schools.
As Mr Truman waits outside the school with his clipboard and vehicle price guide, perhaps he could reflect on the likely outcome of his political principles.
Could his experiment in radical socialism instead result in ultra small-state capitalism? Perhaps he could take things even further and undermine the founding principles of the National Health Service by billing any patients he considered sufficiently wealthy.
