Our estate is in a bad way, help!

• ECHOING K Rowley’s assessment of Camden Council: (The council have lost their way and sunk to a new low, January 19), about trying to get help, our estate is in a bad way.

Only by begging to various email addresses has anything been done to help us (a kindly councillor who lives locally has taken an interest in the issues on the estate, a contractor is coming to look at the windows).

The bins are overflowing, foxes defecating and ripping up rubbish bags, at least two flats on our floor permanently reek of skunk cannabis that seeps into our flat and we have only had a break from large gathering of youths displaying anti-social behaviour because the weather has been bad.

One or two must have been around last night as there was the tell-tale sign of a single-use carrier bag drifting aimlessly around. I exited the security door to be confronted with the bag’s neighbour, a used, discarded, polystyrene takeaway box.

Parts of the estate are visibly crumbling (potholes in the stairs), the housing patrol have been ineffective and the plumbing has always been poor, two of our four radiators don’t work – one hasn’t worked for 18 months.

Trying to get the contractor to help is proving difficult. Lengthy phone calls, waiting in all day for a repair twice in the past month; no one comes, no one phones, we call and are assured that we will be dealt with as a priority and someone will call. No one does.

I looked on Camden’s website to complain. I could not complete an online form because the postcode finder couldn’t find our address (we are an N7 postcode on the border of Islington and we’ve lost count of how many times we’ve been told that we’re Islington residents).

God knows how much more the service charge will be this year for services we don’t receive (nearly £2,000 in 2021/22, nearly £2,400 in 2022/23).

Camden Council – help!
