Swimming pool policy discriminates

• WHEN will they get it right?

I am rather annoyed, to say the least, to learn yet again that GLL / Kentish Town Leisure Centre are discriminating against the disabled and those less confident swimmers who need the safety and relative warmth of the Grafton Pool in order to feel confident in the water.

I have been in contact with Camden Council sports and leisure and GLL with regard to the discrimination in connection with the opening hours of both pools, the Grafton and Willes, for many years.

Since the rebuild there has always been a disparity in opening hours – the Willes Pool being generally open seven days a week from 7am to 9pm but the Grafton Pool only being accessible for shorter hours during school holidays and about three hours a day and the weekends, closing at 4pm generally.

I have recently learnt that the Willes has reopened after lockdown from 6.30am to 9.30pm during the week and 8am to 5.30pm at weekends; whereas I don’t know what the opening hours of the Grafton are, as the link on their website says there are none; but apparently this is incorrect and has not been corrected, leaving no facilities for the disabled, those less able to swim and cope with the cold temperature of the Willes, and children.

This is discrimination under the Equality Act 2010 and I expected more of Camden Council and GLL. I request reinstatement of the opening of the Grafton Pool to be equal to the opening hours of the Willes Pool. And if they don’t have enough staff to open both at the same time then they know what they have to do.
