SIX Arsenal Ladies stars are on their way to Sweden this summer after being chosen for the squad of 23 who will represent England in the upcoming Uefa European Championships.
England regulars Rachel Yankey, Alex Scott, Ellen White and Steph Houghton are all in, as is their 20-year-old Arsenal team-mate Jordan Nobbs, who has one senior cap under her belt.
England boss Hope Powell could find no place for Arsenal’s flair striker Gemma Davison. But the country’s star player Kelly Smith, who has not played competitively since March after suffering a shin injury, was included.
Speaking at the squad announcement in the British Museum on Monday, former Hampstead School pupil Yankey said she hoped England would bring home a trophy. “Winning gold is something we want to do,” she said. “It’s brilliant to see the youngsters coming through and it’s fantastic that we have a squad with people competing for every place.”
England kick off in Linkoping on July 12, against Spain, before facing Russia and France in matches that will be televised on
the BBC.
