Stopping free school meals will lead to great hardship for our children
Thursday, 1st June 2017
• PRIME Minister May will be causing many of our children in rural and inner city schools great hardship by stopping free school meals.
As a retired inner city teacher, I can promise you that the days when some children paid and others didn’t for lunch brought huge stigmatism to the free dinner children.
Let all school dinners be free for all of our children, it’s a right not a privilege, that our children’s bellies are full, that they sit down to eat at a table and converse eating a heathy diet.
We all know that if families sit down to eat, subjects get spoken about that wouldn’t necessarily happen otherwise, and it’s the same for the primary school teacher when they sit to eat with their class.
Many of our children need breakfast too and in case Prime Minister May didn’t know, many schools have been funding breakfast clubs for low-income families for years. Children need food in order to concentrate.
