Sticking to our guns we will either get a deal or leave without one

• IN response to Michael Romberg’s letter, I note his claim that the EU does not rerun referendums, (More unites us than divides in us Europe, August 22).
It may well be the nation states that hold them, some because they have to and others because they decide to, but they are under pressure to conform with the EU’s wishes for treaties to go through.
Minor tweaks to allay concerns and then rerun them to bludgeon into submission the public is hardly democratic or fair.
Valéry Giscard D’Estaing, former French president, said the treaty of Lisbon in which the European Constitution was approved was the same as the constitution which was rejected by the people of France and Holland, nothing can get in the way of the zealous Eurocrats’ ambitions.
I don’t have any problem with student exchanges, but freedom of movement, which does not happen as far as I am aware in any other trading bloc, is unsustainable. We need ease of access for immigration to cope with numbers and to avoid criminals taking advantage of the system.
Mr Romberg states that the EU’s political goals were clear from the start, but I recall them being played down and Ted Heath’s claim that there would be no loss of sovereignty. We now know the truth.
Sticking to our guns we will either get a deal or leave without one. I believe a deal is more likely if we stand firm. It is quite clear people voted to leave and not to stay and both the single market and customs union were mentioned in that respect.
Theresa May did publicly state that no deal is better than a bad deal, but that was not the case during the negotiations. Yes, we should pay our debts, but we need to use the money as leverage in the talks.
Let us continue to work together on environmental concerns and other areas where we have mutual interests and diverge in others while respecting differences. Trade deals are ultimately about negotiation and discussion to reach agreement.
I may totally disagree with the project, but don’t wish to throw a brick through the window as we go… we do need to get on afterwards.
