RISHI Sunak has called a general election for this summer – meaning Keir Starmer could become the next prime minister in six weeks’ time.

On July 4, the country will head to the polls to vote. The MP for Holborn and St Pancras and leader of the Labour Party shared a statement today (Wednesday) after Rishi Sunak called an election outside Downing Street.

According to the latest YouGov poll, 40 per cent of the public intend to vote for Labour and 20 per cent will vote Conservative, meaning our MP is tipped to win the election.

In his speech, Mr Starmer emphasised how Labour will bring about “change”.

He said: “A chance to change for the better. Your future, your community, your country. Now it will feel like a long campaign I’m sure of that. But no matter what else is said and done, that opportunity for change is what this election is about.

“Over the course of the last four years we’ve changed the Labour Party, returned it once more tot he service of working people. All we ask now, humbly, is to do exactly the same for our country.”

He laid out three reasons why people should vote for Labour. Number one was to “stop the chaos”, including cutting wait times for A&E. Mr Keir said he will “reset the economy”. Finally, he said the party had a long term plan to rebuild Britain, including securing borders, “tackling antisocial behaviour”, recruiting more teachers and cutting bill prices.
