Standing in solidarity with Sheikh Jarrah

Friday, 4th June 2021

• WE took part in a protest on Saturday in solidarity with the people of Sheikh Jarrah in Palestine.

The Israeli authorities are carrying out a programme of ethnic cleansing of Palestinians. Israel is trying to ensure that there is a Jewish majority in Israel and in the territories it occupies.

Israel forcibly removed some 750,000 Palestinians from their towns and villages in 1948 (the “Nakba”) and has been removing Palestinians ever since under the pretence of a peace process.

The protest in support of Sheikh Jarrah was held in Kentish Town and included participation from members of the Camden branch of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network, Camden Abu Dis Friendship Association, and Momentum Camden. The protest enjoyed the enthusiastic support of most passers-by.

B’Tselem, the Israeli human-rights organisation, and Human Rights Watch recently declared that Israel maintains in fact a system of apartheid in Israel itself and in the territories it controls.

As the former colonial power in Palestine, the UK has a unique historical responsibility.

Yet the British government shamefully supports the apartheid regime in Israel as it previously supported the one in South Africa.

We call on all the people of Camden to embrace the call for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) of Israeli products. Check your fruit and vegetables at your supermarket and greengrocer’s.

Kentish Town stands in solidarity with Sheikh Jarrah.
