ANOTHER primary school in Camden could shut as the diocese that runs a Gospel Oak primary school has announced a consultation.

Parents at St Dominic’s Catholic Primary School were given letters after school on Friday.

It said that a six week process will begin on Wednesday, and that if it goes ahead, the school in Southampton Road would shut at the end of the 2023 school year.

The letter, from the Diocese of Westminster, said that falling pupil numbers and funding problems were to blame.

“The governing body has a duty to manage the school’s finances well. This means not allowing the school to go into debt, as there would be no way of repaying that.”

Parents have been told in the two-page letter that places will be available for their children at other schools. A series of meetings will take place on Wednesday with parents. A petition has already gained more than 500 signatures.

It comes less than 18 months after the nearby Carlton Primary School closed because of a difficulty in attracting pupils. It merged with nearby Rhyl Primary School to form Rhyl Community Primary School, which has two sites in Rhyl Street and Grafton Road.

Catholic school St Aloysius, in Somers Town, shut at the end of 2019 for similar reasons.

The Diocese of Westminster has been contacted for comment.
