GOLDEN girl Jess Thorpe made a big splash for Camden Swiss Cottage Swimming Club at the weekend when she became a national champion over 800 metres.

Competing in the 30 to 34 years age group, the speedster clocked a time of 10 minutes, 15.06 seconds to strike gold in the 800m freestyle at the National Masters Championships in Manchester.

Jess returned home with a medal of every grade as she also scooped silver in the 100m butterfly and bronze in 200m backstroke.

Club-mate Chris Hopton was also punching the water in delight as he bagged a 400m freestyle bronze in the 40 to 44 age group. Agonisingly the talented swimmer just missed out a return to the podium, finishing fourth in the 800m freestyle, the 400m individual medley and the 200m backstroke.

Camden Masters coach Wojciech Slusarczyk was “pleased with the results”, and is already aiming for more national success in October at the GB Masters Short Course Championships.

The squad is certainly in great shape having recently scored an epic haul of 18 gold medals at the Middlesex County Championships.
