RENEE Slegers has vowed to “bring the really good football back” in the wake of Arsenal’s stuttering start to the season.

Optimism was flying high at the beginning of September when the Gunners kicked off their campaign with convincing victories over London City Lionesses and West Ham.

But they have now failed to win any of their last four outings, the latest of which saw them slump to a 2-1 defeat against Lyon in what was a disappointing start to the defence of their Champions League title.

Speaking after the game at Meadow Park on Tuesday night, Slegers insisted the north Londoners were “one or two things” away from being back on track.

“We spoke briefly with staff and players straight after the game, and that was more about the time we are going through now as a team,” revealed the Arsenal boss.

“Everyone’s working really hard to find that final action, that final detail, and find the margins, because it is about margins – but it will always be about margins at the highest level.

“That’s what we’re looking at and it’s a mixture, a cocktail of things, but we believe that if we get one or two things right, that the rest will rise with it as well.”

Taking any needed motivation from the stands, Slegers added: “The supporters are a big driver for us because they come and they invest and they bring so much energy. We definitely want to bring that back.

“That’s also part of the frustration as you can see them all, and we want to bring really good football back and results. So we’re disappointed about that, but we’ll work really hard to start bringing it back again.”

The Gunners got off to a dream start against Lyon when Alessia Russo fired them into the lead with just seven minutes on the clock. But Melchie Dumornay punished the home side’s errors to maximum effect as she bagged a brace to guide the French champions to a 2-1 victory.

Russo says a “very disappointed” dressing room is now fully focused on “bouncing back” as Arsenal prepare to welcome Brighton & Hove Albion to the Emirates Stadium this Sunday.

“I find it really difficult to reflect right after the game,” admitted Russo. “We’ll look over some stuff in the next few days, but it’s about ourselves. How we can be better, how we can push each other, and ultimately bounce back from a tough period.

“That’s what we want. We don’t want to be dwelling on the past. We’ve got another opportunity on Sunday. We want to build the momentum now, because we don’t like losing and we have really high standards as a team.

“We’ve had tough moments and we’ve risen bigger than ever. I have no doubt, and I have full belief in the squad and the staff, that we’ll do that. It’s just about regrouping, refocusing and pushing the standards even higher.”
