No 10 downing street

‘The current Tory government struggles to accept that the end appears to be closer than they could ever imagine’

• NOW that the United Kingdom economy grew faster than forecast in the January-March quarter by 0.6 per cent, the fastest quarterly growth in over two years, a 26 per cent swing to Labour in Blackpool South’s May 2 by-election, surely helped to strengthen a much-weakened spirit within the current government.

If that was the case, then it also showed with clearer clarity the fickle nature of the British electorate and the poor judgment of MPs as the current Tory government struggles to accept that the end appears to be closer than they could ever imagine.

A weakened Tory spirit and 474 fewer council seats across the country, despite holding power for the past 14 years, surely seemed unthinkable to them while they watched in December 2019 with glee as the electorate rejected Corbynism in vast numbers in favour of Johnsonomics.

However, after it (inevitably) failed, and quickly followed by the disastrous Trussenomic £45billion of unfunded tax cuts, the writing was already on the wall.

But, predictably, no one took any notice and so the (“practically useless”) replacement known as The Windsor Framework, couldn’t possibly help to secure victory for a much weakened and depleted Conservative government that one can say with confidence wasn’t worthy of the trust that the electorate had placed in it since 2010.

Does that mean Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer can practically start choosing new wallpaper and carpet for Number 10 Downing Street?

In my opinion, yes, he can. After all, until the first-past-the-post voting system is finally updated, more political parties can continue putting forward candidates who may sound serious and ready to serve the country until the day they take their seats in the House of Commons and council chambers and proceed to take their constituents from one disaster to another in the increasingly discredited name of democracy.
