SPURS boss Mauricio Pochettino goes into the autumn with a squad that has a make-do-and-mend feel about it after he failed to land a specialist striker during the transfer window.
Pochettino had spoken of the need to find an alternative to Harry Kane – but after failed late bids to land West Brom’s Saido Berahino, he’ll be hoping two of his attacking signings can step into the number 10 role when required. New boys Clinton N’Jie and Heung-Min Son can both play up front, says Pochettino, but are more attacking midfielders than out-and-out forwards.
To complicate matters even further, forgotten striker Emmanuel Adebayor, who hasn’t played for the club since November, failed to secure a move away from White Hart Lane – giving Pochettino the outside choice of bringing him in from the cold to finally start earning his £100,000-a-week wages.
The only done-deal on deadline day saw Aaron Lennon, Spurs last remaining player of the Champions League season four years ago, join Everton.
Meanwhile, Pochettino says he’s pleased with the chances created against Everton and bemoaned keeper Tim Howard’s man-of-the-match display in the goalless draw. “We were better than Everton and we deserved to win,” he said. “We created a lot of chances but when you do that, you need to score. That was impossible on Saturday.”
