THERE’S a strange sense that the season is all but over for a number of the Spurs players ahead of their visit to Newcastle on Sunday.
The home defeat to struggling Aston Villa on Saturday has cast a pall of gloom over the club. Sitting in seventh place, Tottenham could miss out on Europa League football next year – leaving manager Mauricio Pochettino facing up to what could become a massive rebuilding job in the summer.
Midfielders Paulinho, Etienne Capoue and Mousa Dembele all have question marks over their future at the club, while the same goes for strikers Emanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado.
With Alex Pritchard winning rave reviews on loan at Brentford, and Tom Carroll also set to return form his season long loan at Swansea, the final games of the season will give Pochettino clues as to who remains at White Hart Lane – and where he needs to strengthen.
Debutante DeAndre Yedlin, who made his first appearance as a substitute against Villa, has told American newspapers that he fancies a run out as a winger for Spurs. With no natural right-footer due to Aaron Lennon’s loan at Everton, the right-back said he would be happy to push further forward to get game time.
Meanwhile Tottenham travel to Newcastle with just two doubts in the shape of full back Kyle Walker, who missed the Villa game with a foot injury, and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, who has been out with a knee injury.
