A group of Amy Winehouse’s biggest fans mark ten years since she died
TEN years on from her death, Amy Winehouse is “still bringing people together” said fans as they arrived in Camden Town to mark the anniversary.
People travelled from as far as the Midlands and East Anglia to gather close to the singer’s former home in Camden Square. Cards, pictures, flowers and letters were placed around a tree outside the house where she died, as her songs played.
Alice Wood travelled with her family from Norfolk to be at the memorial.
Dressed in a denim jacket with Amy’s face on the back, she said: “Amy has inspired me in everything really, she’s the reason I picked to study music – she inspired my look.”
Her father, Ron Wood, said: “Alice’s love of Amy has made us love Camden, we come up here and see where she lived and spent time.”
The Wood and Mason families meet again
The Wood family sat with another family, the Masons, that they had met the year previously.
Chelsea Mason said: “Every year we come and there are familiar faces. Amy means so much to us, we were having a really tough time starting our family – and we related to her, she was just a normal person.”
While her children danced to Back to Black, Ms Mason added: “The stories people say about her are cruel, only her true fans know her – she’s so misunderstood.”
One superfan, Daniel Jackson, who had come down from Birmingham for the day, he said: “My favourite song is Tears Dry On Their Own. If you say your favourite is Rehab then you’re not a real fan, because you’d know she hated singing that.”

He’s made friends at the memorial in previous years.
“I met a man here once who had come all the way from Brazil, he flew in specially and then left the same afternoon,” he said.
The fans plan to come back every year on July 23. Michael, who did not want us to use his surname but runs instagram page @Amywinehousefanatic brought balloons for people to write messages on.
He said: “I’m going to give them to her mother, to show her what we did for Amy today.”
Michael has three Amy-related tattoos.
He said: “I don’t care what people say about her. She was so alternative, she’s the best person that has ever lived.”
