People could sell their car and save money
• YOUR correspondent Nigel Shindler suggests that ULEZ exemptions be made for a “significant number of people, especially pensioners or poorer disabled people … who own older cars” who keep them for “essential purposes such as a local weekly shop or for medical emergency use”, (How the effect of ULEZ expansion could be eased, May 18).
He suggests instead that use of these cars could be rationed to one day per week. An alternative for these people is to sell their car, save money on motor insurance, tax, MOT, maintenance, parking charges and general running costs.
They could then join a car club or use a taxi for those essential once-per-week journeys. They will be much better off in the long run and they may even find that they can do some of their journeys by public transport or active travel.
