‘There might still be a chance to stop this criminally wasteful scheme in its tracks’

• I HAVE just learnt that the petition to stop HS2 is getting a very slow response. It seems that signing one petition has exhausted the public’s energy: like President Gerald Ford, they can’t both fart and chew gum at the same time. This is a pity. More than a pity.

I would have thought everyone who lives in this blighted area – think of the people whose homes and livelihoods have been destroyed, or try driving down Parkway to see the blossom in Regent’s Park – would be as thrilled as I am to find there might still be a chance to stop this criminally wasteful scheme in its tracks.

From the outset HS2 has profited no one but the developers, who must be rubbing their hands in glee as they see how slowly the figures on this petition are mounting.
