Save Coram’s Fields

Friday, 22nd May 2020

• MY husband’s grandmother started Coram’s Fields with a friend in 1936.

Her name was Christabel Burton, née Harmsworth, being the youngest sister of Lord Northcliffe. She was an amazing woman with a great social conscience.

Among other things she worked hard to improve conditions for nurses, which she found appalling, and got things done very quickly. She also started milk for children in schools as so many had rickets due to lack of protein.

Before I married into the Burton family, my father, Jupp Dernbach, was invited to do the lettering for the words Coram’s Fields.

I feel extremely lucky to have become a small part of her family. I hope the fields are saved and wish them well.
