PEDRO Martinez Losa said Arsenal Ladies’ penalty shoot-out victory against Notts County on Sunday “tasted sweeter” than a usual win.

The Gunners booked an FA Cup semi-final showdown against Sunderland after coming from 2-1 down to force extra-time and then penalties at Meadow Park.

Former England striker Kelly Smith put the home side ahead in the 21st minute with a superb half-volley. But Notts County battled back to take a half- time lead courtesy of goals from Sophie Bradley-Auckland and Aivi Luik.

The visitors had England forward and former Gunner Ellen White sent off for two bookable offences, and Arsenal took full advantage when Natalia Pablos Sanchon headed home a late equaliser.

With neither side finding a breakthrough in extra time the game went to penalties, where Gunner goalie Sari Van Veenendaal proved a star as she saved three spot-kicks before Katie McCabe struck the winner.

“It was difficult,” Losa told Arsenal.com. “When you get things that have come from a lot of effort, it tastes better. All credit goes to the players. We are in the semi-finals which is what we wanted. There was a lot of tension out there, so it is a relief.

“The players have been working so hard but also, in front of our fans, we want to play our best football. Our best football will come. We want to dedicate that win to the fans and show them how good the team can be.”
