ARSENE Wenger is hoping that Alexis Sanchez’s “love of football” won’t result in him missing their next Premier League outing away at Watford.

The Chilean attacker stole the headlines at the weekend when he scored twice as the Gunners ran riot against Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium – winning 3-0 to move within two points of league leaders Manchester City.

Sanchez was substituted 10 minutes before time with “a slight” injury concern, one that Wenger is worried could be made worse during the international break.

“Sanchez has a little groin problem,” said the Arsenal boss.

“Unfortunately he now goes to Chile. You cannot stop him from going to Chile because he loves so much to play for his country.

“He will play against Brazil on Friday and then Peru next Tuesday, the game at home against Brazil he certainly will not want to miss. Hopefully he will come back to us in good shape.”

Theo Walcott also starred against United, setting up two of Arsenal’s three goals. The 26-year-old has now joined up with England – and instantly declared that he wants to be given a chance up front if Wayne Rooney fails to recover from an ankle injury in time to face Estonia at Wembley on Friday.

“I know everyone would like to see me up front,” said Walcott. “Playing there for England, that’s what I really want to do.”

Wenger has joined the list of supporters backing Walcott to be a success in the striker role, especially after seeing him put in his “best performance” up front against United on Sunday.

“I must say Walcott had a hugely committed performance against United in a hugely convincing way,” said the Frenchman. “He didn’t score but I like to praise the strikers when they don’t score and contribute and give assists. He was involved in two goals and really did fight well.

“He showed that he can fight, commit and protect the ball as well. He is gaining some aspects of his game as a centre forward and is improving. As a striker I would certainly say it was his best performance.”
