BUKAYO Saka insists Arsenal “will be ready” for Paris Saint-Germain after helping the Gunners stroll into the semi-finals of the Champions League.
The winger displayed plenty of bottle at the Bernabeu on Wednesday night as he recovered from missing a penalty to grab the opening goal against Real Madrid.
Gabriel Martinelli also scored as Arsenal earned a famous 2-1 win in Spain, sealing a thumping 5-1 victory on aggregate.
The reward is a place in the final four, where the north Londoners will meet PSG. The first leg takes place at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday, April 29, with the return leg at Parc des Princes being held the following Wednesday.
Mikel Arteta’s side have every reason to be confident ahead of the tie, especially having already beaten the French champions 2-0 this season.
PSG have, though, improved exponentially since then, and Saka is expecting a much tougher challenge.
“[PSG are] much different, I see them playing with much more confidence,” he told TNT Sports. “We will be ready. It will be a big challenge, a very good match, but we’ll be ready.”
Saka was presented with a golden opportunity to settle any nerves in Madrid when Arsenal were awarded a 13th-minute penalty after Raul Asencio was caught tugging Mikel Merino’s shirt. The Gunners’ “Starboy” doesn’t make many mistakes, but his decision to try a panenka could have proved a costly one as Madrid keeper Thibaut Courtois all-too-easily palmed the ball away to safety.
But Saka is made of stern stuff. The 23-year-old doesn’t buckle under pressure, and – as much as opposing defenders might wish otherwise – he doesn’t just go away.
Shortly after the hour-mark the England international made amends for his miss when he raced onto Merino’s clever pass and casually chipped Courtois.
Reflecting on his penalty, Saka said: “It can happen. I tried something, but it didn’t work.
“I was confident I was going to score tonight, I kept my head and I managed to do it in the second half. I’ll learn from it and move forward.”
Describing the win at the Bernabeu as “one of the best nights” in his career, Arteta will no doubt already be busy plotting the downfall of PSG.
But that doesn’t mean the Arsenal boss won’t take a moment to savour the magnitude of toppling holders Madrid.
He said: “It’s one of the best nights of my career, a really special one.
“We played against a team that have been an inspiration for us in this competition.
“To win the tie in this manner, we have to be very proud of ourselves.
“It is just the third time in our history we have got this far, so we need to build on that. We are hungry. We are a young team that are determined.
“All these experiences will help us to try and achieve something big. We had full belief we could beat this team and dominate them, but then you have to do it, and the players did it.”
