THERE was sun and mud in equal measures as runners from London Heathside signed off their final fixture of the decade in the Sunday Cross-Country League.
Athletes from the Finsbury Park-based running club faced up against five miles of rolling park and woodland at Fairlands Valley Park, in Stevenage, just before Christmas in the third of five meetings in the league.
Among the top performers in the latest league outing were Matthew Wheat, who clocked a time of 30mins, 27secs to finish 14th out of a field of 280 runners in the men’s race. He was just 13 seconds ahead of clubmate Phil English (30:40), who finished 17th. David McCormick (31:23) was the third Heathsider home as he finished in 27th place. Overall the Heathside men’s “A” team are 13th out of 19 clubs.
In the women’s race, Ruth Miller led Heathside’s contingent home as she finished in 40:11 to take 27th spot out of 165 finishers. Kim Butler (41:18) was 37th, while Emilia Vynnycky (42:43) was 58th. The senior women’s “A” team are now seventh out of 19 teams.
The Heathsiders will be back in league action on January 12 when they travel to Cassiobury Park in Watford for race day four.
