HAMPSTEAD received top tips from Wales defence coach Shaun Edwards this week when the former Wasps coach joined them at training.
The first XV took the experience to a strong Basildon side on Saturday but even though they fought back from 15-0 down, Hamps were unable to overhaul the home side.
A try on half time by skipper Pete Evans gave Hamps hope, but Basildon nosed in front again with a third try after the break.
Second row Matt Sollars forced his way over, and Damien Naughton went on to convert well for Hamps to make it 20-14.
But Basildon sealed victory with a penalty with the final play.
Fourth in the table Hamps look to get back on track this weekend at home to Enfield Ignations.
