FOOTBALL teams from across Camden and Islington are being invited to sign up for one of the friendliest five-a-side leagues in town.

No sooner had the curtain come down on another fun-filled season in the Talacre Playcentre Primary Schools League, organisers switched their sights to making the next campaign, which is due to kick off in October, even bigger and better.

The 2014-15 competition proved a memorable one for players from Talacre Colts after they won a league and cup double.

Sides representing Talacre FC, Rhyl Street School, The Winch and Three Acres also showed off their skills every Thursday at Talacre Playcentre in Wilkin Street, Kentish Town.

Organiser Lloyd Heath said the ethos behind the league was the same today as it was when he started the competition almost 30 years ago.

“We’re all about fun and fair play, and giving boys and girls the chance to enjoy the game in a friendly environment,” he said.

“We’ve still got space for a couple more teams, and would love to hear from playcentres and after- school clubs from across Camden and Islington who are up for tackling a fun new challenge.

“We’re a mixed league, so it would also be great to see more girls signing up to join in,” he added.

The spirit of the league isn’t the only thing that seems to have stayed the same over the years – with Talacre Colts winning their ninth successive league title this season.

There was double delight for Matthew Bishop’s side as they also beat The Winch 5-0 to win the League Cup. Hotshot Jeremy Bambi scored a stunning hat-trick, while strike partner Taylor Dowsett bagged a brace.

There was a host of individual awards handed out too, with Tamanie Paul and Sufi Ali respectively crowned The Colts girl and boy Player of the Year, while George Greeves was named Talacre FC’s Player of the Year.
