THE green at Parliament Hill Fields is officially open this Saturday, and the host bowls club are inviting newcomers to join in and help drive out a “misleading stigma” plaguing the sport.

Members from Parliament Hill Bowls Club are gearing up for the start of the new campaign, which will see them play countless club, county and friendly matches.

President Derek Mennell will be among the players leading the line as he attempts to retain the Finchley and District Officers Cup which he won last season.

His son Paul, who is also the club secretary, insists however that silverware isn’t the most important thing. “The image is that bowls is only for old people, but that’s just not true,” he said. “A lot of the champions dominating the professional circuit at the moment are in their 30s.

“Not only that – but there’s a stigma that the green is for members only and closed to the public. But we will happily welcome anyone who wants to come down on Saturday, talk to the coaches and maybe even try their hand at the sport.

“We actually want newcomers to come along and enjoy the game. So much so that this year for the first time ever we’re offering an introductory membership of just £50 for the first year, whereas normally it’s £100.

“There’s also the option to pay £3.50 for the hour if they just want to try the sport out first, so come along and take part.”

Members from Parliament Hill Bowls Club will be at the green from 1.30pm to 6pm on Saturday.
