HERE’S one for nostalgic clubbers: FEAR and Loathing at The ROXY, a free photography exhibition curated by artist and historian Jane Palm-Gold, showcasing iconic moments of The ROXY Club through photographs and historic club posters from photographers Derek Ridgers, Ray Stevenson, Jeremy Gibbs, Rebecca Hale and more, runs until next Wednesday (May 10) at 35-37 Neal Street. The exhibition coincides with the recent unveiling of a commemorative blue plaque for The ROXY at its original location, 41-43 Neal Street, by the Seven Dials Trust to mark 40 years since the club’s opening – part of the trust’s People and Street History plaques project.
• Rock ‘n’ soul musician Michael Jablonka, who has been touring with Michael Kiwanuka, plays his first solo set at Kentish Town’s MAP Studio Café on May 6.
• Incidentally, as it should be, Michael Kiwanuka’s Royal Albert Hall date on May 5 is sold out – well deserved.
• Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes hosts a special tribute to The Doors tomorrow (Friday) with a live performance from The Strange Doors, a screening of The Doors film, a Jim Morrison poetry session, whiskey bar, go-go dancers and roadhouse blues cocktails.
• Rat Boy plays the Roundhouse on May 6 in support of new album Scum, with Spring King and The Sherlocks in support.
• Indie Britpop band BLESS hail from all over north London – they launch their new single Easy Lover (steady, Phil Collins) at The Rocksteady in Dalston on May 6, after playing the Roundhouse on Friday – handpicked by Frank Turner to play his Lost Evenings Festival.
• Barbados-born Dennis Bovell, cited as is Britain’s greatest ever reggae producer, joins author, journalist and DJ, Bill Brewster, for a night of conversation and music at King’s Cross bar and haven of vinyl, Spiritland, on May 7.
• Squeeze founder and co-writer Chris Difford, former Blow Monkeys frontman Dr Robert and Matt Deighton, who fronted acid jazz band Mother Earth and was guitarist for Paul Weller in the 90s, play 229 on May 8.
• Andrew Combs, one of the front-runners of the new alternative scene in Nashville, introduces his recently released eco-inspired record, Canyons Of My Mind, at Borderline on May 9.
• TLC, once responsible for soundtracking a generation of roadtrips with 1994 album, CrazySexyCool, revive old-school R&B in Camden next week, playing a sold-out show at Koko on May 9.
• Blues rock band Ladies Of The Blues, featuring Elles Bailey, Gabriella Jones and Amy Khonsari, play The 100 Club on May 9.
• Ever wanted to star in a music video? The May 5 deadline is fast approaching for entrants to Sparks’ competition for fans to appear in a spoken-word video of the band’s current single, and title track of their forthcoming album, Hippopotamus.
