Road crossing a step too far

Friday, 12th November 2021

• COUNCILLOR Danny Beales tweeted on November 8 that Camden had “opened the first Trans flag crossing” in the borough.

The implementation of this colourful crossing went ahead despite the London mayor, Sadiq Khan, announcing a pause of such projects on the November 3 because of research presented by Transport For All which evidenced the negative impacts and confusion they have on guide dogs, police horses and people with dementia (among other groups with disabilities).

What assessments did Cllr Beales carry out, equalities impact assessment or road safety assessments? Surely officers should have known of the dangers and the decision made by the London mayor.

Was the Royal National Institute of Blind People, with its head office located just five minutes from these crossings, consulted?

What will Cllr Beales now do to ensure that those with visual impairment / who rely on assistance dogs will be able to use these crossings safely again?
