A YOUNG man died riding his bike on Wednesday following a collision with a heavy goods vehicle in Fitzrovia.
Police said the man, believed to be in his 20s, was pronounced dead in Fitzroy Street near the junction with Howland Street.
Witnesses said the wreckage of the man’s bike could be seen underneath a lorry that had appeared to have come out of a construction site for the new Network Building in Tottenham Court Road.
The Keltbray construction company managing the site said in a statement it was aware of a road traffic accident between “one its sub-contractor’s lorries and a cyclist”.
“Keltbray is supporting the police, emergency services and our sub-contractor in their investigations as required. While investigations are ongoing it would be inappropriate to comment further.”
The road is one of several streets that have been updated with cycling safety measures including contra-flow bike lanes.
The man had not been named as of yesterday, Thursday, but the MPS said: “Police were called by the London Ambulance Service at 7.53am to reports of a lorry in collision with a cyclist in Fitzroy Street. Next of kin have been informed. There have been no arrests at this time.”
A London Ambulance Service spokesperson added: “Sadly, despite the best efforts of our crews, a person was pronounced dead at the scene.”
