Black Sheep Coffee is to breathe new life into the building next to Camden Lock

A PRIME spot next to the canal in Camden Town is to be brought back into use as a coffee shop – but operators must also provide information on the waterway’s history for visitors.

Black Sheep Coffee is moving into the old lock keeper’s cottage close to where tourists watch the water being levered up and down each day – and marvel at some of the mohican haircuts sported by punks on the nearby bridge.

Starbucks had formerly traded on the site for more than 15 years before leaving when the lease expired. A planning requirement for anybody taking on the premises is to also operate as a local information site.

“To the immediate left-hand side of the entrance a dedicated Canal Information Centre leaflet and local information display unit is proposed that can be used for general leaflets on the canal and the local area,” said an application by Black Sheep Coffee for the new shop. Information boards will also be on display.

The company said it had sought the views of the Canal and River Trust over the content.
