Residents are recycling more now

• IT is heartening to see that Labour-controlled Camden’s recycling rate is up by more than 20 per cent since the new contract started last year.

The Tories have been obsessed with tweeting pictures of fly-tipping, a national problem, but have said nothing to help local people recycle more. Funny that.

And what is the Tories’ answer? On their own figures, they want to spend a million pounds every year just to turn the clock back. That’s £1million less each year for other essential services.

Well, you can’t turn the clock back. The world has moved on. Residents are now getting used to the new system and are actively recycling more.

The change to fortnightly general bin collections, while keeping recycling collections weekly, hasn’t been easy, but we shouldn’t lose sight of the fact that the council was forced into this by Tory cuts from central government.

Labour in Camden is trying to do the right thing for the environment and should be applauded for pushing up recycling as well as saving money. That’s why Labour should be re-elected on May 3.
