YOUNG fighters from St Pancras Amateur Boxing Club are in for a real treat next week when they get the chance to train alongside a team of Olympians.
Their newly-refurbished gym in Talacre Road, Kentish Town, will house the French national team for at least two weeks as they prepare to go for gold in the London Games.
Senior coach CJ Hussein (pictured) believes it’s a golden opportunity for his young amateurs.
“We’re expecting a big team to land on our doorstep,” he said. “I’ve been led to believe that the French squad will not only be bringing their fighters, but also sparring partners, their physios, strength trainers and even their nutritionists.
“Some of our young fighters already benefited back in April when Alexis Vastine, who won a bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics, came over for a few days.
“Two of our top youngsters, Charlie Worley and John Archer, both got to spar with him, which gave them real confidence and belief in what they’re trying to achieve for themselves in the ring.”
Even with more than 25 years experience coaching under his belt CJ, who has worked in the corner for a host of professional boxers including Martin Power, John McDermott and Vidoz Paolo, believes he will also benefit from the French guests, who are due to arrive on Tuesday.
“With the way that the science in the sport has evolved, along with the stretching methods and nutrition, it will be a real
eye-opening experience for me. Hopefully I can pick up a few tips to use with some of our amateur fighters.
“Obviously the Olympians will want their privacy to get ready for the Games, but we will still get to watch how they train and that alone will be a real honour for everyone involved with the club,” he said.
