Remove trees? There’s plenty of room on pavements there

• I WAS astonished by your report that Camden Council have ordered the removal of trees in Conway Street, (Gallery owner Rebecca Hossack: ‘Save our trees!’, June 15).

On my way to the medical centre in Fitzroy Square, I always make a detour through this tranquil part of Conway Street to enjoy the trees and the pale green painted plant boxes.

There is very little footfall in this section so I can see no reason for anyone to complain about blocked pavements. It is not as though football crowds are expected to cram the street. There is still plenty of room on the pavements for prams and wheelchairs.

Perhaps the staff of the tree felling department of Camden Council could be seconded to the street cleaning department.

On June 18 most of the trees in the pavements of side streets near Conway Street were surrounded by bags of rubbish and the plastic boot around a new tree was full of plastic cups, cigarette packets and such.

Opposite the Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery part of the pavement is nearly always dumped with rubbish. It was clear on June 18. Perhaps Ms Hossack’s community effort was having some effect to shame those responsible!

Is this another example of “foot and mouth” by council officials who should be encouraging such welcome initiatives? “Think on” as we say in Yorkshire.*
