Reinstate garden waste collections now

Friday, 17th April 2020

• I TOTALLY agree with Steve Cameron (Letters, April 9), Camden/Veolia should “reinstate the garden waste collection services immediately”.

I’ve paid annually to have my garden waste collected ever since the paid scheme was introduced some years ago. Normally I’m sent an invitation to renew around mid-March.

This year no such email arrived (and not only to me, since I’ve found that several of my neighbours also weren’t contacted). On Thursday April 2 the bag of garden waste I’d left out wasn’t collected.

I contacted the site – uk.veolia.waste.oc.camden.mailbox@veolia.com – and was told my subscription had expired the previous day and that no new subscriptions were being accepted. I protested that this wasn’t a “new” subscription, but got nowhere.

Veolia tried to shift the blame for “not sending out the letters” on to Camden Council and then Royal Mail. Since the invitation has always been emailed, this wasn’t very convincing.

We need these collections reinstated. Otherwise, people will be putting out recyclable garden waste in their refuse bags or spreading pollution by burning it.
