Redevelopment of the Euston area that’s unwished for
Thursday, 11th May 2017
• IT is true that Camden Council has gained some useful minor assurances relative to the period of construction including, for example, that HS2 Ltd should engage with us on its detailed proposals.
But looking back from the future on Sarah Hayward’s leadership at Camden, the strongest impression is likely to be that, hanging on the coat-tails of HS2, she and her team bent over backwards to bring about unwished-for redevelopment of the Euston area.
This attitude is enshrined in the planning document the Euston Area Plan, where an enlarged Euston station is taken as a given and carried further, as well as in the council’s shameful encouragement of Network Rail’s proposal that Euston Square be “flipped”, as in the letter from the Camden Civic Society which you published (It’s astonishing Camden Council seem to have taken up the idea of reorientating a historic square, March 30).
