Red lights on cranes are there for a reason

Thursday, 18th August 2022

• THE red lights on the cranes at the O2 development site are now a familiar feature of the night sky.

But at about 9pm on Friday I noticed that the lights were off. The site manager’s mobile number wasn’t working so I then phoned the council emergency service.

The man who answered told me quite laconically that it is unlikely that anyone would come out at this hour. I found this incredible, and pointed out that this was a night service, otherwise why would he be answering the telephone at 9pm?

The red lights on cranes are surely there for the safety of low-flying aircraft, not for decorative purposes!

I believe the situation I’ve described constitutes a “dangerous structure”, which Camden’s building control department would be responsible for investigating.

I’m becoming more and more reluctant to pay my council tax. I’d always believed that a major duty of councils was to keep people safe.
