Questions on safety

Thursday, 25th October 2018

• IT seems odd to me that Keith Scott departed his “groundbreaking job” in less than a year, as Camden’s “director of resident safety” on £100,000pa, (Town Hall safety chief leaves £100k job after less than a year, October 11).

From your report, it appears his departure was unexpected, at short notice. In the same report council leader Georgia Gould is quoted as saying that Mr Scott “played an important role in helping us deliver a new standard of resident safety in Camden”.

To understand what she means by this assertion, I ask Cllr Gould the following questions:

1 – What UK, BS and EU recognised systems of quality assurance and safety accreditation of the council are now in place, which were not in place a year ago?

2 – What new key performance indicators (KPIs) have been adopted by the council in the last year concerning fire safety and its delivery in the council’s housing stock?

3 – How are the KPIs measured and monitored? By whom? And how often?

4 – What improved delivery mechanisms and structured monitoring systems have been introduced into Camden’s project management procedures in the last year related to fire safety?

5 – If there are failings of fire safety, what new mechanisms for intervention and rapid action have been created? How are they triggered? And by whom?

6 – As requested a year ago by resident members of Camden’s fire safety advisory panel, when it was set up, is there now in place within the council a new infrastructure of professional fire engineers with responsibility for fire safety in Camden’s housing stock, on a geographical “patch basis”?

Camden’s residents (like myself, a leaseholder in a tower block) and Camden-registered tenants’ and residents’ associations are not interested in broad-brush assertions about “a new standard of resident safety”.

Residents want to know what hard-core improvements have arrived; with structured systems for monitoring, intervention, action and improvement. I therefore look forward to Cllr Gould’s early reply in the New Journal pages to my questions, as above.
