Queens or Queen’s for NW5 – get it right

Thursday, 23rd March 2017

• I NOTICE that in Queen’s Crescent, NW5, the lamp posts are festooned with banner flags as part of Camden Council’s promotion of its markets – laudable.

I am worried about the presentation of the headline: Queens Crescent (without an apostrophe). This would suggest a crescent of queens, rather than correctly used (with an apostrophe) a crescent belonging to the Queen (possessive sense). An important distinction.

The copy editor should have picked up on this.

I wonder whether the work was carried out in-house by the council or outsourced to a wildly expensive modish design company. If the latter, then I suggest the council should demand their money back.
