Put out more flags – it's the Last Night of the Proms

The annual flag-waving jamboree
You know the summer is over when the Proms wrap up – as they do this Saturday 14th with the annual, flag-waving jamboree of the Last Night.
For me it’s always a questionable event: I’m not into flags (although I did wave a European Union one last year, and may again), and I’m not particularly into the jolly japes that dedicated promenaders deliver with predictable abandon every time. The jokes wear thin.
But it’s harmless. And while Saturday’s programme isn’t inspired, it does feature the American mezzo Jaime Barton who won Cardiff Singer of the World a few years ago and has both a voice and personality big enough to fill the Albert Hall as these occasions require.
You won’t strain to hear her. And if you don’t have a ticket (they’re already allocated), it’s all broadcast live on Radio 3 and BBC 1 and 2, starting 7.15pm. Wear a silly hat and get in the mood, if you must.
