Public spaces are essential

• “THE minority of loud individuals do not need the space of Belsize village to make a living,” wrote David Rose, (In defence of the streatery, September 9).

My August 26 letter (Protect our free open spaces) was about Camden Council taking away public spaces, without consultation with communities, spaces, once gone, we will never get back.

Let me stress, it was not about me not supporting our local traders, new and old, which I certainly do, and I have fought to keep the chains out of our area, Tesco’s and the Co-op. Ask the traders, they will tell you.

Personal attacks against people who have different views detract from the issues that make us stand up to be counted.

We have many families living in Belsize Park who do not have access to gardens, whether in social or rented properties; therefore public spaces are essential where they can play and meet other children.

Especially during the pandemic, these spaces have become even more important for friends and neighbours to meet to natter and cheer each other up, young and old, somewhere to go and find a friendly face.

As far as Belsize Terrace is concerned, CCTV has been installed and benches have been moved without consultation at the convenience of the street eatery, denying us the pleasure of sitting in the sun.

The only business which truly benefits from the terrace street eatery is Ronnies, where I take my coffee most mornings with the lovely, friendly, staff before I buy my fruit and veg at the Crescent Fruiters and eat at the local restaurants from time to time.

We are lucky to have them, but the businesses have to remember the needs of residents too.
