NEWCASTLE United football fans literally drank a Kings Cross pub dry yesterday (Sunday) after descending on the capital for a cup final.

The Dolphin in Tonbridge Street was one of the pubs selected by the Toon Army to form a “Geordie village” ahead of their Carabao Cup game against Manchester United at Wembley.

Landlord Michael Holden said: “We weren’t expecting the amount of people that we got, we were expecting to be busy but not as busy as we were.”

The pub ran out of beer yesterday afternoon afternoon, and Mr Holden said:  “We had to close at 5 o’clock. It started on Friday evening, Saturday was nice and steady and then yesterday there was too many people really, but a lot of people came down without any tickets, so they were all around King’s Cross. We had to turn a lot of people away.”

But he added: “They were lovely, really well-behaved, no arguments, no nothing. It’s never been as big as this before – as one of the chaps said to me, ‘there’s no one left in Newcastle except our mothers.”

…but they were back for more on Monday after a new delivery of barrels arrived in the morning

When the New Journal visited the pub today (Monday) there were still Newcastle fans – whose team lost the final 2-0 – wanting one last pint before their trip back to the north east. Luckily, a new delivery of beer barrels arrived this morning.

Sharon Cuthbertson, from Gateshead, said visited Trafalgar Square with her sons and husband after the match.

“Everyone had a brilliant time – Trafalgar Square had thousands of people there all singing and dancing – and they even helped clean up after,” she said.

Other pubs in King’s Cross were also chosen as stops for the ‘Geordie Village’, including The Boot, McGlynn’s and Mabel’s Tavern.

Luke Cooper, who works behind the bar at Mabel’s, said: “My shift was meant to start here at two or three [in the afternoon] but I got called in early because there were 40 people queuing outside at 11 am waiting to come in. The whole day it was packed.”

“It’s the biggest day they’ve had in about 25 years, even busier than the World Cup – it was amazing because it was packed but they were lovely people.”

Liam Birney, the manager at McGlynn’s in Whidbourne Street, said: “It was stupidly busy, but we pre-ordered because we knew what was going to happen. We knew there was going to be thousands of them. It was a great weekend, they were really well behaved, [we had] no issues. We’d probably taken four times what we’d normally take on the weekend and we had no stress, literally no stress.”

Thousands of fans didn’t even have tickets to go to Wembley but wanted to be in London anyway, watching the match in pubs – and through pub windows. Aerial shots of Trafalgar Square of the weekend confirmed how tens of thousands of supporters had poured into the city centre.
