IT’S OFFICIAL: the real ale served at Tapping the Admiral is probably the best in the world.

The independent pub in Kentish Town has been named so by the Campaign for Real Ale which has crowned it north London’s pub of the year.

Managers Josh Freeborn and Freddie Odong are the experts in how to store and serve ales and explained the work that goes on in the cellar of the Castle Road bar to ensure every pint serves lives up to its billing.

Mr Freeborn said: “Real Ale is uniquely British. There is no country anywhere else in the world that does fresh real ale, with all the complexities and uniqueness of the cask beer. London is at the forefront of it – and we are at the forefront of London’s real ale scene.”

Mr Odong said: “It is a hard patch to win – north London has lots of competition, lots of great pubs serving real ale.”

The duo follow a strict process, from sourcing interesting beers from independent brewers to how the casks are cared for in the cellar.

Mr Freeborn added: “Young people are becoming more knowledgeable about it, and there is a slightly older generation who have simply never had a decent real ale to try. “It is very different from the real ale that you’d be served in the 1970s.”
