Prosecute those who rob the public purse
Thursday, 11th January 2024
• REGARDING: Forum: Suggestions for Labour’s manifesto, January 4), May I add my own open letter to Sir Keir Starmer about Labour’s manifesto?
I want to see prosecution of those who defraud the public purse made much easier and with long enough jail sentences to frighten people who think they can buy their way out of anything.
Currently very severe punishments are unavailable for those encouraging wrong bidding for public contracts, for instance, so we have watched how this has really paid off for offenders who have skipped away without much problem.
The only thing that will restore my faith in politics is to see prosecutions wherever possible of those who have already committed crimes against the people and think nobody can catch them.
Let them be made an example of, so that we can see for ourselves that our interests matter to the government. Let us see for ourselves if politics is not, in fact, all about politicians telling lies and benefiting themselves.
”Rebuilding trust” means “seeing is believing” and I want to see proposals to pursue public fraudsters firmly in the manifesto. As a first step.
