Floating Bus stop in Royal College Street

Floating bus stops ignore needs of pedestrians

• IT’S no surprise that Camden is now having to consider creating bus lanes in Parkway and Kentish Town Road to try to reverse the negative impact of their own policy.

The build-up of congestion that severely obstructs and delays buses is the consequence of a policy that forces more and more traffic onto fewer and narrower main roads: closing and restricting side roads cuts off the safety valves that previously allowed traffic through when these major arteries were overcrowded or blocked.

Clearly, in devising the plans, the Town Hall thought more about diverting domestic vehicles than the entirely predictable havoc that would be caused to bus routes.

It’s very apparent from both this and the creation of highly dangerous floating bus stops that straddle cycle lanes that the council’s hierarchy of road users prioritises cyclists while completely ignoring the needs of both pedestrians and bus passengers.
