THERE was major drama even before a ball had been kicked in the World Cup final on Sunday morning, as Town Hall officers realised they could not get a big screen into the park to show the game as planned.
A “Jumbotron” (large screen telly) crisis at Talacre saw officials work through the night after cars were found to be blocking the entrance to the green in Kentish Town. Instead, the council put up the bunting in Talacre Road that was closed off at the last moment as dozens of fans took their seats.
The Lionesses lost to Spain after a brave battle, but one that ended with familiar heartbreak for England fans as the national side came so close and yet so far.
Council leader Georgia Gould said: “It was a heartbreaking loss but I’m so glad all the girls that came to watch saw women who fought with everything they had and never gave up.
“There was so much joy and pride and I hope this will see many more girls and women take up football and I know we will be celebrating this England team in the future.”
She added that she was “really grateful to the Camden staff who worked through the night” to ensure the game could be shown in the street instead of the park.
Pubs across Camden were able to open early to serve customers ahead of the final.
