Press for a people’s vote
Thursday, 27th September 2018

• MAYOR Sadiq Khan has come out in favour of a referendum on the terms of Brexit with the option to remain.
His announcement followed a resolution passed by the London Assembly on the initiative of Assembly Member and Highgate councillor Siân Berry which incorporated an amendment put forward by Andrew Dismore, AM for Camden.
Camden had one of the highest Remain votes in the country at 75 per cent. Since then we have learned just how damaging Brexit would be. So support for remaining in the EU has risen.
Our borough council should call for a people’s vote by passing a resolution and forwarding it to all MPs. I urge your readers to write to their councillors to that effect.
The case for a referendum is very simple; it’s good informed decision-taking. In 2016 Leave had no plan. That referendum therefore provided a mandate to create a plan.
No one takes a project from idea to implementation without a review of the project plan. The same people as voted on Brexit-the-idea should decide on Brexit-the-plan. It would be the first time that the electorate would be able to make an informed choice between two concrete propositions.
Soon we will know what Brexit means. Of course, car means car. But before you hand over your cheque you will wish to know whether it’s going to be a Bentley or a Lada. That’s why we the people need the final say.
