Poll figures hardly illustrate a vote for democracy

Thursday, 10th October 2024

• WE are all for democracy, aren’t we.

Really?

Take a look at the turnout and the results of the three recent by elections in Camden: Camden Square, South Kentish Town and Kilburn.

Turnout: a bit over 15 per cent – that means about 84 out of every 100 people did not bother to cast their vote.

Only in Kilburn did Labour manage to amass enough votes to beat all other candidates combined, and then only by 54 votes; and the total votes cast against Labour were 1,819 to Labour’s 1,722.

That’s hardly a ringing endorsement for the party ruling our borough.

And that does not include spoilt papers…
