Piers memory will be cherished by all who knew him

• THANK you to your reporter Tom Foot for an excellent and wide-ranging summary of the life of Piers Plowright, (Piers Plowright, ‘saintly’ radio legend buzzing with curiosity, July 30).
I was deeply sorry to hear of his passing, having been privileged to enjoy his friendship over many years, mainly in connection with Burgh House where he was a very loyal and actively supportive member.
As Tom relates, he interviewed many local celebrities for the “Lifelines” series, always thoroughly researched beforehand.
His house on the corner of Willow Road and Well Walk was a magnet for children with a huge rocking horse intentionally on show in the front window, and apart from all his other commitments and talents, he helped organise the Gayton Road Festival, and led poetry evenings at the Magdala Tavern before it closed, fortunately now reopened.
As you say, a “true man of Hampstead” which he loved and his memory will be cherished by all who knew him.
