• A TRUE Hampstead man indeed. We would like to add our tribute to your excellent obituary of Piers Plowright, (Piers Plowright, ‘saintly’ radio legend buzzing with curiosity, July 30).
He was, for many years, an ardent supporter of Burgh House, and when the Library in Keats Grove became a self supporting charity, he found time to support us too.
We held many delightful evenings with Piers interviewing actors and writers. Although he often already knew them, he always did his homework, so his questions were always on the button and he made the conversation flow effortlessly.
He also had the most marvellous voice (having given up acting because of stage fright) and read poetry beautifully. We were awed by his erudition and yet he never made you feel inadequate.
A regular visitor and borrower at the library, all the volunteers will miss his quiet gentlemanly manners. A great loss not only to Hampstead, he was admired and loved and we will miss him.
