Heron news: ‘There is more than just the one survivor’

• I DID reply to the letter that John Haynes cites about the disappearing herons, (Tale of the lonesome heron, January 31).

In that letter I said that an Royal Society for the Protection of Birds representative had told me the herons had started nesting early because of the unusually mild winter.

We have since had a heat wave in February and a rather cold spring, so perhaps the poor birds are still confused.

However I saw two on the ground and two in one of their nests last week, so there is more than just the one “survivor”.

Yet there do seem to be fewer herons than in previous years. Perhaps someone else has more ideas as to why this might be.
